Introduction

The purpose of this site is one focused goal: to collect information regarding, and to encourage EMI/Capitol to finally release of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" album on SACD.

Many rumors and dates have been floating around the web over the past five years about the iminent release of this title on SACD.

Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon has already been released on SACD (in 2003), and is still widely available. The band has been quoted as saying that they are happy with the SACD format, and the DSOTM reissue has met with reasonable success.

The 30 year anniversary of the WYWH album came and went without a release, and more recent rumors state the following:

In 2008, a February 2008 release date was rumored (stated by Strom Thorgerson himself) which came and went. While anticipation is still very high for this title, some worry that it may never see the light of day on SACD due to, perhaps, perception at EMI/Capitol management that there is no demand.

This site aims to at least attempt to consolidate information on the matter, as well as serve as a lead point to try to convince EMI/Capitol that yes, Wish You Were Here is still very much desired on SACD.

Note that at this time, I don't have any more information than most people do about this possible release. The goal however is to provide one front, complimentary to Pink Floyd fansites such as brain-damage.co.uk (no affiliation) dedicated to encouraging the release of, and gathering information regarding the release of this album.

  1. You know, if they want to transition this to blu-ray audio and include loss less hires audio in 7.1 channels I'd settle...

But YES, one way or another they've got to get thins thing done. It had better source material than Dark Side of the Moon, and much more of an 'environment' to it, so I can only imagine how wonderful it would be to sit in the 'optimum seat' with the lights out and let this album wash over me! Can't wait!!

  2. They need to stop sitting on it... Several sources say this is done. The petition is a start but we really need to get in contact with the decision makers.

If they want to go blu-ray, fine. If they want to release sacd, great. If they want to release it on one of those blu-ray/SACD combos, wow, even better, but -- "when pigs fly", right?

Maybe brain-damage.co.uk or pinkfloydz.com may know who on earth people can talk to to say that they want this released.

  3. Bluray, shmooray; we were led to believe WYWH would be released on SACD, so lets encourage EMI/Capitol to commit to releasing the album. If anyone muddies the water by bringing up Bluray, I can guarentee record company execs will put the project on hold to evaluate the Bluray option - and then they might even decide to shelve both Bluray and SACD. If you are a Bluray fan, please put that thought on hold until we get the SACD version - we can lobby for Bluray next. All the Best, John

  4. Seems like not a lot of activity on this site; is there a central site for this topic?

    As to the substance...

There are now over 6000 SACD releases and plenty of players, other than the confusing lack of SACD capability on Bluray boxes.

Therefore SACD seems like the right surround format for now. Surround music fans are probably used to having more than one player, so the lack of SACD on Bluray players is not much of a concern, but I am concerned that multi-channel audio ONLY discs are not "ready for market" on Bluray technology (e.g. would you need a television to play audio discs? This was the case with some DVD-Audio discs and was a totally dumb idea).

Bottom line, there is a market for surround sound, including people like me who would buy a product in surround that they already have in stereo (a 50+ year old technique) or just plain wouldn't buy in stereo.

  5. If one was to look at the sacd.net site and request the top sellers list and then compare that list to the compendium of sacd titles, the question to ask is why are so few great and important rock and popular music titles missing as SACD. Let us make a list of possible answers to that question.

"The long-awaited 5.1 version of 'Wish You Were Here,' mixed by James Guthrie, will also be released in parallel via independent label Acoustic Sounds."
